UU World : Michelle Deakin reports on a new documentary film about the Rev. Greg Stewart and Stillman Stewart, a gay couple who adopted five sons. Greg Stewart said, "We knew we had a very special story, but the reason we share it is to expose people to the foster care crisis in America and to encourage people of liberal faith to act on their beliefs. We want them to consider adoption or foster care or some other way to inject themselves into a child's life."

UU World : UUA President Peter Morales writes: "What moves you? I mean what really touches you at the very core of your being? Are you called to comfort those in pain? Are you called to help make worship a more moving experience? Is music your ministry? What will you do when you let love guide you? What do you need to give?"

UU World : Rudy Johnson, a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany, New York, writes in the Albany Times-Union about his celebration of Kwanzaa: "From a distance, Unitarian Universalism and Kwanzaa may not seem akin. Yet philosophically, I liken the two reverences to neighboring nations."

'Two loves have I,' the black expatriate Josephine Baker once used to sing of her feelings for both Paris and America. Except perhaps for her relocation abroad, the native Missourian also might have sung of having two souls, as have I and, historically, many other African-Americans.
Lynette Wood

Lynette Wood I am proud to be a UU. Lets do more PR. I think there are lots of closet UUs in our world. They just don't realize we exist and how cool we are.

UU World : Merry Christmas from UU World! From the magazine's archives, Carl Scovel writes: "What can you say about [Christmas] pageants? What should you say? Is it fair to warn a fledgling minister? They’re like war, childbirth, and one microsecond of a holy visitation."

UU World : Ken Sawyer tells the story of the best-known Unitarian Christmas carol, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," written in 1849 by the minister of the Unitarian parish in Wayland, Massachusetts, Edmund Hamilton Sears. (Ironically, other denominations have modified the lyrics to make it seem more Christ-centered.)

UU World : Columnist Doug Muder writes, "Each year Christmas brings us many progressive and uplifting themes: peace on Earth, the rebirth of hope, and the renewing power of love, among others . . . But the bittersweet nostalgia of Christmas is more problematic. It’s narcotic. Overindulgence can deaden us to the present and leave a hangover of depression and failure."
